OVERVIEW OF COURSES
2019-2020
ENGLISH 6
In sixth grade English, students will learn how to expand their reading, writing, and grammar skills. We will accomplish these tasks by completing novel studies, papers, projects, and other reading and grammar activities throughout the year. The Virginia Department of Education states that the requirements of this course are as follows:
The sixth-grade student will be an active participant in classroom discussions.
The student will present personal opinions, understand differing viewpoints, distinguish between fact and opinion, and analyze the effectiveness of group communication.
The student will continue in the study of the elements of media literacy as introduced in earlier grades.
The student will begin the study of word origins and continue vocabulary development.
The student will read independently a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, including a significant number of classic works, for appreciation and comprehension.
The student will also plan, draft, revise, and edit narratives, descriptions, and explanations, with attention to composition and style as well as sentence formation, usage, and mechanics.
The student will also demonstrate correct use of language, spelling, and mechanics by applying grammatical conventions in writing and speaking. In addition, technology will be used as a tool to research, organize, and communicate information. As in earlier grades, the meaning and consequences of plagiarism will be stressed (VDOE).
We will accomplish these goals by using the SOLs provided by the state. They can be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/english/index.shtml if you wish to access them throughout the year.
ADVANCED ENGLISH 6
In Advanced English, we use the same SOLs and guidelines in our learning as we do in the regular course, but we take it one step further. Throughout the course, while reaching these requirements, we also complete projects and novels throughout the year that enhance our understanding of science and history. The topics that we are covering can be seen below:Â
1: Post Civil War and Reconstruction: (9 Weeks)
SOLs: USII. 4a; USII. 1 a-g
2: Outer space and space exploration/colonization: (6 Weeks)
SOLs: 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, 6.8
3: WWII: (7 Weeks)
SOLs: USII 1 a-h; USII 7 a,b,c
4: Civil Rights: (6 Weeks)
SOLs: USII 9a
We will accomplish these goals by using the SOLs provided by the state. They can be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/english/index.shtml if you wish to access them throughout the year.
MY BELIEFS
Middle School = THE BEST
Why I Teach
EVERYONE LEARNS DIFFERENTLY
One of the reasons I love teaching is because I love making sure that people I reach their full potential. I want to provide students a safe space to create and become their true selves.
Students learn in many different ways because each student is different. It is difficult, but as a teacher, it is my job to ensure that each student is learning in the most beneficial way. I make this happen through notes, discussions, projects, and activities in the classroom.
EVERYONE CAN CREATE
Middle school is the most awkward time in a teen's life, and I love it.Â
Middle schoolers are going through a LOT, but this makes them: caring, funny, angsty, goofy, random, loud, messy, angry, loving, nervous, and overall, THE BEST.Â
What many of these sweet students don't realize is that no matter how they are feeling, they are capable of creating something amazing. This ties back to the previous column: I incorporate different learning styles into my classroom so kids can find their niche--the thing they're good at. Then I give them a safe space to hone and conquer their crafts. Everyone can create, and I want to provide students with a space to do that.
EVERYONE HAS THE POWER
We are who we make ourselves. I believe in giving students the ability and autonomy to make their own choices. I am only a guide and someone who can give advice on the journeys that we will undergo together.

My end goal is to have my students come out of my class at the end of the year knowing more about themselves as learners and humans.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME
My name is Ms. Katilyn Shull, and this year will be my second year teaching. My first year at KCMS was amazing, and I can't wait to continue learning along with my students!
A few things about me:

In my spare time, I love to bake, spend time with my dog, and write poetry.
Flowers and floral prints are my favorite!
